Group Classes

Group classes can be another valuable way to study the Alexander Technique. While students don't receive as much individual attention as in a private lesson, group classes offer the benefits of observation, group activities and discussion. They can be an excellent way to get an introduction to the Technique or focus on a specialized activity, and can serve as a useful supplement to individual lessons. Imogen is currently offering the following group classes:

Do you sit at your computer each day, eyes on the screen, hand on the mouse, deeply absorbed in your work or pressured to meet a deadline? You barely move for hours, until late in the day you feel compressed and tense - maybe your elbow has started to tingle, pain shooting through your forearm, or your fingers go numb. Maybe your back is aching and neck sore, but you ignore the symptoms to get the work done. In this class you will get tips from the Alexander Technique on how to sit well while at the computer. Not only does finding the best sitting position help relieve your aches and pains, it makes you more productive. Learn how to set up your chair and computer station at work or at home so as to promote good posture and reduce strain. You will also learn how to lie down in the "balanced resting state" as a way to relieve the tension and stress of many hours sitting at a desk, restoring good, natural spinal alignment. (See the flier.)

For people with any sort of neck and back problems, bending can become a hazardous undertaking. Unfortunately almost everyone with back trouble has learned the hard way that bending from the waist is painful and harmful. In fact, reaching down to get something from a coffee table, or to open a low drawer, can often get us in more trouble than reaching all the way down to the floor. This is because when bending just "half-way" most people bend only from the waist and keep their knees straight. In this class we will use the Alexander Technique to find an alternative way of bending, that can actually ease tension and spinal compression. Done well, you will actually be helping your back, not harming it! You will also learn how to lie down in the "balanced resting state" as a way to allow muscles and joints to release excess tension, while restoring good, natural spinal alignment. (See the flier.)
